By Mark Smitshowski | Published 01/12/2006 | Atkins Diet |  printer version
Most people know something about the basics of Atkins by now.  You begin by eliminating carbohydrates almost entirely from your diet, which places your body into a state called “ketosis”.  You rely almost entirely on protein-based foods and supplements for your nutritional intake.  After the first, “Induction Phase” (14 days) you can add 5 more grams of carbohydrate per week, but they must be very controlled kinds of carbs: leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and berries.  No bread products, cereal, and certainly no sweets.

» Caveman Diet
By Mark Smitshowski | Published 01/16/2006 | Caveman Diet |  printer version
Also known as the Paleo, or Paleolithic Diet, or Neander-thin, this plan claims that if we eat as our caveman ancestors did, we will lose weight.  The theory is that foods that are derived from agriculture and technology are bad for us, and that the healthiest way to eat foods is in their closest-to-nature form. Basically, it’s a low carb diet.  It eliminates processed foods, all baked goods, coffee, alcohol, beans, sugar, artificial sweeteners, and starchy vegetables.

Slim Fast has been around for a long time, and most of us are familiar with their products through their rather aggressive advertising campaigns.  You drink a shake for breakfast, another one for lunch, and have a healthful meal for dinner.  They have also branched into the meal replacement bar market, as an alternative to their shakes.

» South Beach Diet
By Mark Smitshowski | Published 01/26/2006 | South Beach Diet |  printer version
The South Beach Diet is not a cost effective method of weight loss, nor is it particularly easy to follow, but the nutritional theories that they teach are sound.  Followers are encouraged to eat whole grains, cut down or eliminate processed, nutritionally empty carbs, and watch fat intake.

» Zone Diet Review
By Mark Smitshowski | Published 01/26/2006 | Zone Diet |  printer version
Zone Diet – The “Zone” of the title is not a place, it is a state of being within the body that, according to this plan’s proponents, exists when the hormones that are governed by the foods that you eat are in the right balance, i.e., neither too high nor too low.  This diet seeks to keep the user in that beneficial place to assist in losing weight.
